New! PingPlotter 5.27!

A major update to PingPlotter

PingPlotter 5.27 is now built on .NET 10 and Avalonia, bringing a faster, smoother experience to both Mac and Windows. A lot has changed under the hood.
Day to day, it just feels better.

What's new

A modern foundation brings better performance, true cross-platform parity, and room to grow.

Modern foundation

Built on .NET 10 LTS with Avalonia's GPU-accelerated UI. You'll notice sharper graphs, faster startup, and smoother scrolling, especially on high-DPI displays.

Native Apple Silicon

Runs natively on Apple Silicon Macs with no Rosetta translation layer. You get full-speed performance and improved battery life.

Built-in TCP traceroute

Diagnose ICMP-filtered paths on Mac and Windows with no third-party packet driver to install. A long-requested feature, now built right in on both platforms.

Full Mac and Windows parity

Docking, workspaces, network discovery, alerts, and session management all work the same on both platforms. New features ship to both at the same time.

A Note from Our Founder

PingPlotter turns 30 next year. I did not see that coming.

The original version was something I built for myself (using Borland Delphi), because I had a network problem and troubleshooting it… well, sucked. A lot has changed since then. Network troubleshooting still has its moments, but PingPlotter has always been about making it suck less.

In 2013, we made a big shift and rewrote everything in .NET to move beyond Delphi and support modern Windows. Since then, we stayed on .NET Framework because it shipped with Windows, and used Mono and Xamarin to make things work on Mac. Once again, the ground has shifted a bit and this is no longer the future.

So ... drum roll ... here is the next PingPlotter. Technically, Version 5.27, but let’s be honest: the number is not the interesting part. It’s now built on dotnet 10 and Avalonia, a modern cross-platform UI. Mac and Windows now share 99% of the same code.

This brings us better performance, lower memory use, improved multithreading, stronger security, and a smoother experience all around. There’s a lot that’s new, and a lot that’s familiar too. We are still using C#, and the core engine is still the same C# engine from before, but improved.

What comes next? We believe in helping people make stronger connections. Better visibility, fewer mysteries, less time guessing.

We’re a team of 14 people, all focused on that goal. We care a lot about getting this right, and we are grateful you’re here with us.

Thank you for being part of our journey.

Major improvements

Interactive focus overlay

The time graph focus period is fully draggable. Move it, resize it, flip direction, or clear it.

Precision timeline scrubbing

Pull the slider thumb away from the track to reduce sensitivity and land on the exact moment, even across hours of data. Relative context like "2.5h ago" helps you stay oriented. Also available in summary windows.

Inline trace grid search

Ctrl+F or Cmd+F opens live search with match counts and auto-scroll. Find any hop or address instantly without leaving the window.

Prevent sleep while tracing

A configurable setting with consistent defaults across platforms. Keeps your machine awake during active traces.

Native macOS notifications

Alerts use standard notification banners that respect Do Not Disturb and Notification Center.

Auto-expiring unresponsive hops

Hops that stop responding will fade from the route display after a set threshold. Keeps your trace clean without manual cleanup.

Drag-adjustable latency legend

Drag color boundaries to set thresholds visually on Windows; right-click to apply across all windows.

Email template editor on Mac

Build alert emails with live preview and drag-and-drop variables. Improved on Windows, and now available on Mac for the first time.

Also in 5.27

  • Cell-level focus and copy for columns in the trace graph
  • Copy as Text for traceroute-style output, now available in Cloud
  • Crisper graph rendering through GPU-accelerated Skia graphics, especially the jitter graph
  • Updated keyboard shortcuts with more native keybindings
  • Smoother row-flash animation linking trace grid to time graph
  • Responsive control panel that adapts cleanly at narrow widths
  • "Changes Pending" counter and Discard button in settings
  • Improved help links and tooltips throughout settings
  • DNS lookups no longer loop for unresolvable hosts
  • Toast notifications introduced for certain actions
  • Smarter Mac install dialogs with better version detection
  • Additional Mac alert audio formats including AIFF, AAC, and M4A
  • Redesigned Windows installer with clearer copy and a simple service install option

And hundreds of other smaller changes, tweaks, and optimizations.

Compatibility requirements

PingPlotter 5.27 requires Windows 10 or later and macOS 12 (Monterey) or later.

Still on an older OS? PingPlotter 5.25 and earlier and v4 remain available.
