PingPlotter Cloud Manual
Agents & Targets
The Agents & Targets section of the Alert editor controls which Agents and Targets the Alert watches. There are three ways to assign them:
- Apply to all Agents and Targets - every current and future Target.
- Apply to Agents and Targets using a filter - every current and future Target that matches the filter.
- Apply to specific Targets - only the Targets you select.
To change an existing Alert's assignments without opening the editor, click the magnifying glass icon in the Assignments column on the Alerts page.
Apply to All Agents and Targets
This is the default for new Alerts. The Alert watches every Target on every Agent, and new Targets are added automatically.
Apply to Agents and Targets Using a Filter
Use filters to assign the Alert to a group of Agents and Targets that share something in common, like a department, a location, or an IP range. The Alert updates on its own: new Agents and Targets that match the filter are added, and ones that stop matching are removed.
Pick a field, then type or select a value. You can filter on:
- Custom Fields - any of your Agent Custom Fields, e.g. Department or Manager.
- Agent Name
- Target Name
- Target IP
- Target IP Mask (CIDR) - every Target whose IP address falls within a range (see below).
Values support wildcards, e.g. New* matches "New York" and "Newark". Click Add a filter to add more. When you use more than one filter, a Target must match all of them.
The table below the filters shows every Agent and Target that currently matches.
Target IP Mask (CIDR)
Use CIDR notation to match a range of Target IP addresses. For example:
- 192.168.0.0/24 = 192.168.0.0 - 192.168.0.255
- 10.0.0.0/21 = 10.0.0.0 - 10.0.7.255
- 172.16.0.0/28 = 172.16.0.0 - 172.16.0.15
- 8.8.8.8/32 = only 8.8.8.8 (on every Agent that targets it)
Pro Tip
Use a CIDR Calculator to help you get the right range of IP addresses.
Apply to Specific Targets
Check the box next to each Target the Alert should watch. Use the Search Agents / Targets box or the column filters to quickly find what you're looking for. Checking the box in the header selects every Target currently shown in the table.
Targets you select here don't change on their own. New Targets aren't added, so use a filter if you want the Alert to keep up with changes.
Searching vs. filtering
The search box only changes what's shown in the table. In filter mode, if your search hides some matching Targets, a note tells you how many. They're still included in the Alert.
